When we were first married, I was 19, we were both in college and we made the choice to honeymoon in the Pennsylvania mountains.
It. Was. TERRIBLE!
The scenery was beautiful, but we both got sick and ended up in the ER. A long story short, our 10-year anniversary was our “do-over”. We celebrated by taking a break from the craziness of life on the islands of Kauai and Oahu.
This time, it was an amazing experience! My family lived in Hawaii when I was a child (my dad was in the Marines) so while in Oahu I was able to show Shane some of the sights I remembered from childhood. If you ever plan to visit, find Shark’s Cove. It’s a great place for snorkeling, not over populated by tourists, and right down the beach from there we were able to swim with sea turtles. But, keep your distance, the rule is 6 feet of distance and people on the beach have no problem getting confrontational with those who don’t listen.
Next, we set out for Kauai and it left us in awe. The cliffs are amazing! Even if you’ve never visited, you’ve probably seen them. It’s where they filmed parts of the Jurassic Park movies.
Ok, so this is random but we found this little stow away left with our things by Shane’s parents. We named him Roswell, made him a tourist and took funny pictures of him all over the island at different landmarks and sent them back to his folks as a joke.
We spent most of our time in Kauai on the north shore relaxing in Hanalei Bay, playing in the waves, taking surfing lessons and visiting the local farmer’s market.

The surfing lessons went great for my husband, me on the other hand… well, lets just say they had a policy that if you didn’t stand up in 2 hours your lesson was free and I came very close to getting mine free. Although there’s no way we would not have paid our instructor. He was great and it wasn’t for lack of trying on either of our parts, my hands and knees were bleeding from my failed attempts. On the other hand, we laugh because for each time I rode in or rather, fell and got taken in by the waves, my husband had already made two trips and was on his way to mastering slowing down, speeding up and turning. My husband and I are great examples of how we’re not all created the same. But more on that later.
On our last day, we decided to stop at a local music store and check out the ukeleles. I hadn’t played a stringed instrument before but loved the carefree sound of this one. On the drive back to our hotel I wrote this song at first as a joke, but have to admit, I really like it now as it’s filled with tidbits of our adventures. The relaxed island lifestyle captured our hearts and we agree that Hanalei Bay in Kauai now ranks as one of our favorite vacation spots.
